On January 12, 2010, shortly before 5pm, a 7.3 Richter scale earthquake, lasting 35 seconds, ravaged Haiti. This was the most violent earthquakes to shake Haiti in almost two centuries. Although the densely populated capital of Port a Prince was brutally ravaged, other areas such as Carrefour, Cité Soleil, Kenscoff and Léogâne experienced almost total decimation, with 80% of their buildings and infrastructure wiped out.
The earthquake’s human impact has been colossal. Approximately one quarter of a million Haitians have lost their lives; another 300,000 have been seriously injured, thousands more children are now orphans and almost 1.5 million people are having to live in temporary, unsanitary, shelters throughout the country. To exacerbate matters further, experts predict the rain season may be more catastrophic than the actual earthquake. In addition to flash floods, mud slides, countless water borne diseases, and heavy rains will make access to food and basic services, at times, almost impossible.
The situation is all the more tragic when one considers Haiti is one of the poorest nations in the world, a frequent victim of hurricanes and a history of turbulent and tyrannical politics. The billions of dollars pledged to her by the international community will help build the country anew however, as Haiti falls off the media’s radar we ask you join us and keep her struggles and progress alive in our minds and hearts.
